About

me

I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Computer Science from the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milan, Italy) in 2013 and 2015, respectively. My Master’s thesis mainly focused on the simulation of large-scale biochemical models. I designed and developed a novel approach accelerated on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). I obtained my PhD in Computer Science with a thesis on High-Performance Computing to tackle complex problems in life sciences”, under the supervision of Prof. Daniela Besozzi and Prof. Paolo Cazzaniga, at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Milan, Italy) in February 2019. During my PhD program, I spent different months abroad as PhD visiting student at the Department of Cancer Biology (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA) and the Computer Laboratory (University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK). During my PhD, I mainly focused on using High-Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, especially GPUs, to tackle complex problems in life sciences. I also exploited Computational Intelligence meta-heuristics to deal with the intrinsic complexity of different well-known problems in life sciences (e.g., the Parameter Estimation in Systems Biology, Haplotype Assembly in Genome Analysis, enhancement and segmentation of bimodal Magnetic Resonance Images).

From November 2018 to November 2020, I was a Research Associate at the Department of Haematology of the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK) and Wellcome Trust – Medical Research Council Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (Cambridge, UK). In addition, I was a visiting worker at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Wellcome Trust Genome Campus (Hinxton, UK). During this period, I mainly worked on analyzing single-cell sequencing data by both proposing novel approaches and strategies to analyze these data, especially single-cell RNA data.

From December 2020 to November 2022, I was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Bergamo (Bergamo, Italy). From December 2022 to August 2023, I was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Bocconi Institute for Data Science and Analytics (BIDSA) and the Department of Computing Sciences of the Bocconi University (Milan, Italy). During this period, I mainly worked on designing AI-based approaches and tools to help increase our knowledge about the processes that drive both cell development and the progression of different pathologies.

Since September 2023, I have been an Assistant Professor in the new Department of Computing Sciences at Bocconi University. My research bridges the areas of Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tackle complex and computationally intensive problems in biology and medicine, to move another step toward personalized and regenerative medicine. To do so, I strictly collaborate with expert biologists and physicians to perform data integration analyses and propose novel and advanced computational strategies to support personalized medicine.

Thus, my main scientific interests include Computational Biology, Computational Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, Computational Intelligence, High-Performance Computing, and Biomedical Image Analysis.
